Dichtermuseum Liestal was founded in 1946 to present and preserved the literary estate of famous local authors. The collection started with manuscripts and personal posessions of the famous German revolutionary poet Georg Herwegh (1817-1875) and his wife Emma (1817-1904), the collection was extended with objects and manuscripts of Joseph Victor Widmann (1842-1911), Carl Spitteler (1845-1925, Nobel Prize 1919), Hugo Marti (1893-1937) and many other, more locally known poets and authors. It was originally located in the third floor of the town hall, but in the 1990 the collection had grown too big, so another location was needed.
In 2001 the poets museum merged with the local history museum and opened in a dedicated historic building close to the former location. One floor presents local history with relics and documents from the Neolithic era to the recent past, two floors are for the poets and artists. The museum also runs a used book store and a little gift shop; the local tourist information center is also located here.
