Text from the town's website:
"This mural introduces Dr. and Mrs. Oatway (center) and his assistant Nurse Deans (insert) who were responsible for the safe delivery of thousands of babies in the area. Dr. Richard MacRae Oatway was born in October 1877. In 1908, Dr. Oatway and his wife, the former Grace Gillrie, settled in Stony Plain and raised three children. Dr. Oatway practiced medicine for over 45 years. The Oatway house (top right) was located immediately north of the existing train tracks. The practice of medicine on the prairies was difficult, and Dr. Oatway gained the community’s respect for his faithful and dedicated service."

"DR. RICHARD McCRAE OATWAY, 80, who was a pioneer doctor in the Edmonton district of Alberta, died in Edmonton on October 2. He was born at Almonte, Ont., and graduated in medicine from the University of Manitoba in 1902. After a year's internship at the Winnipeg General Hospital he became a company doctor with the firm which was building the Canadian Northern Railway westward from Manitoba. In 1907 Dr. Oatway moved to Stony Plain, where he practised for 46 years. After his retirement because of ill health he moved to Edmonton.
Dr. Oatway is survived by his widow, a daughter
and two sons."'
