Dupont: Fourth Night in Indiana - #16 Sign/Marker, John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail 1863 in Indiana. General Morgan's main column arrived in Dupont on July 11, 1863, traveling some 35 miles that day. Most of Morgan's men camped at the bend of Camp Creek. General Morgan stayed overnite at the Stout House on West Front Street. James Frank Lewis, the 8 year old son of a local doctor, was captured and held prisoner in the Mayfield Smokehouse until he became homesick and was released. Some 2,000 hams were taken from the Mayfield Smokehouse. Sally Trousdale taunted Morgan's Raiders by flying two American flags from her two-story house. The Mayfield Store was robbed of $1,600 and Mayfield's daughter. Josephine, a fiery redhead sceamed at Morgan's raiders for disturbing the peace; one of Morgan's men, Harry Snook was so attracted to Josephine that he vowed he would sonmeday return and marry her (After the war, he infact did return and married her, and they ended up living in Chicago). Willing and unwilling local women made biscuits all night for Morgan's troops. Morgan's Raiders departed Dupont early July 12, 1863; Union cavalry began arriving just 5 hours later in Dupont. The Union troops were hungry and locals cooked for them too.
