Captain James Cook is most famous for his mapping and exploration voyages in the Pacific undertaken on behalf of the Royal Navy, where he ultimately died in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians.

Cook was born in Upper Shadwell on Oct 7th 1728; hos son was baptised at St Paul's Church, Shadwell.

The plaque reads:

CAPTAIN JAMES COOK
"The ablest and most renowned Navigator this or any country hath produced" lived in a house a few yards from this spot, 126, Upper Shadwell
1763-1765
