Beckett Hospital started in 1865 as Beckett Dispensary and Hospital, in 1871 name changed to Beckett Hospital and Dispensary. Before 1948 it was run voluntary with subscriptions. In 1948 it came under the National Health Service.
In 1979 the hospital closed with the completion of the new Barnsley and District General Hospital.
Some of the original buildings including the 1938 wing are still in use for other purposes, the 1938 wing being Barnsley District Register Office.
