This plaque is on the tower of St Mary's Church, Rotherhithe. The Mayflower was captained by Christopher Jones, who lived in Rotherhithe and whose children were baptised at St Mary's, and who was buried in the graveyard there.
The Mayflower left Rotherhithe in 1620 and sailed to Plymouth, and thence to America. It is thought to have left from near the site of the nearby pub, then called "the Shippe" but now called "the Mayflower".
As stated on the St Mary's Website the plaque was unveiled on 25th November 2004, thanksgiving day, by a descendant of the Pilgrim Fathers, David L. Citron of the US Embassy.
The plaque reads:
Sailing of the Mayflower
In 1620 the Mayflower sailed from Rotherhithe on the first stage of its epic voyage to America.
In command was Captain Christopher Jones of Rotherhithe
