This monument stands near to St Mary's church, Rotherhithe
Christopher Jones was the master of the Mayflower, which famously conveyed the Pilgrim Fathers to America in 1620, and which is reputed to have departed from a spot very close to this monument. Jones was a native of Harwich, but settled in Rotherhithe and was buried in St Mary's churchyard, but the grave was been lost during rebuilding work in 1715.[1]
The statue is by Jamie Sargeant, and depicts St Christopher, looking back towards the Old World, carrying a child looking forward to the New. It was unveiled on July 2nd 1995. [2]
The plinth is in the form of a stylised boat, with sharp prow and rounded stern. Around the plinth is written.
To the memory of Christopher Jones 1570 - 1622 Master of the Mayflower. He landed 102 planters and adventurers at Plymouth Massachusetts 21 Dec 1620. They formed the Mayflower Compact the first permanent colony in New England.
According to the BBC [2] the statue was paid for by the The Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, but I can't find any reference to it on their website nssdp.com
The Jones River in Kingston, Massachusetts was named by the Pilgrims after Captain Jones.[3]
Unfortunately the statue has suffered some vandalism, with the child's feet and the figures' noses being damaged.
