The station was originally known as Holborn (Kingsway) when it opened in December 2006 - some of the station roundels still display this name - and was given its present name in the 1960s. The name Holborn is derived from the medieval English words "hol", meaning "hollow" and "bourne" meaning "brook", and is thought to be a reference to the River Fleet.
