This marker to the 18th Independent Battery Indiana Light Artillery also known as Lilly's Hoosier Battery, is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. It marks their postion on Saturday, September 19, 1863 at 4:30 P.M.

From the plaque located at the marker:

18th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery 6-3” Rifles, 4 Mountain Howitzers. Wilder’s brigade, Reynold’s Division. Thomas’ Corps. Sept. 19, 1863. 4 P.M, Capt. Eli Lilly, Commanding 1st Lieut. Joseph A. Scott 2nd Lieut. Moses M. Beck 2nd Lieut. William B. Rippetoe.

The four mountain howitzers of this battery, detached with these 92nd Illinois, and serving with King’s brigade of the division, came into position on this ground about 4 P.M., on the right of the 19th Indiana battery and opened only rapidly advancing line of the enemy, (Johnson’s Brigade) with canister, but King’s brigade and the 92nd Illinois, having been outflanked on the right and forced to retire, and the enemy continuing to press through the timbered hollow on the unprotected right and rear, the howitzers were forced to retire with the loss of one gun. The remainder of the battery was engaged in the Viniard Field.

Short Physical Description

This standard Indiana marker consists of a 4' x 4' x 4'8" high rock-faced oolitic stone block with a peaked top and a 12" x 18" bronze plaque affixed to its front. Marks battery's position in Brotherton Field.
