The Opera National de Paris, or the Palais Garnier, Opera House was was built on the orders of Napoleon III as part of the great Parisian reconstruction project and was inaugurated on 5 January 1875 in Paris, France.

The Palais Garnier or the Paris Opera House was the inspiration for Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux 1910 novel "The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l'Opéra)". This novel and the opera house further inspired Andrew Lloyd Weber to write his 1986 musical "The Phantom of the Opera".
