This office tower, that has been referred to as the 'silver sword' was the former headquarters of NOVA and is now the corporate headquarters to Nexen. Nexen is an upstream oil and gas company with its head office here in Calgary, Alberta.

"Nexen was formed in Canada in 1971 as Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. when Occidental Petroleum Corporation combined its Canadian crude oil, natural gas, sulphur and chemical operations into one company. "
In the 1970s, their Western Canadian assets were added to when they started drilling in the US Gulf of Mexico. In the 1980s, Western Canadian and Gulf of Mexico assets were added to through continued acquisitions.
In the 1990s, a large discovery at Masila in Yemen was made that started production in 1993. In addition, Canadian production tripled in 1997 by purchasing Wascana Energy Inc.
