Upper Ham at Upton-upon-Severn is one of the oldest Lammas Fields in the country. It is frequently flooded by the rising water in the Severn and this gauge is placed at the Minge Lane entrance to the field. The gauge is calibrated in 20mm divisions with the main mark indicating 12m above sea level.
The field is often flooded during the winter and the fertilised hay is left to grow until the owners take off the hay into bales in June and July. Stock is then allowed to graze from August 1st. until January.
It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the large numbers of flower and grass species which flourish there. As there is no longer a towpath along the river bank there are a large number of trees with many nesting sites for birds and shelter for otters.
Using its large size a rifle range was set up here and used from 1863 until 1925, then again occasionally from 1939 to 1945. It had a range of 1000yards (0.9144m).
