This church has a long history, being the first rural Catholic church in New York State.

The first church serving this community was a wooden building built in 1829, and dedication in 1832 by Father Frances O'Donoghue as Saint Ambrose.

A stone cross was erected on the site of this first building when its replacement, a brick Romanesque building was constructed and dedicated as Our Mother of Sorrows in 1860. The bishop of Buffalo Diocese presided over the dedication, as the Diocese of Rochester did not yet exist. (visit link)

Seventy years later, celebrating their centennial, 5000 people heard mass in the cemetary, and Governor and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt participated in the celebration.

Our Mother of Sorrows claims to be the spiritual mother of many other parishes: Holy Cross (1863), St John the Evangelist (1865), Our Lady of Mercy (1957), St Lawrence (1959) and St Mark (1964). (visit link)
