On a rainy night in Oxford a senior fellow of Beaufort College, Dr Julian Dear, is attacked and dies of a heart attack, just before he is about to take part in an environmental debate. The College Master, Matthew Copley Barnes is also injured by Dr Dear’s attacker. It is believed that Dr Dear was going to expose a scandal relating to the College’s investments in an agricultural chemical firm called Corby International.
Whilst investigating Dr Dear’s death, Morse finds out that Copley Barnes is receiving strange packages. Staying with Copley Barnes is an investigative journalist, Sally Maxton, who was a childhood friend of Copley Barnes’ daughter. Sally shows Morse a photo album of the two children playing. Morse eventually works out that Copley Barnes has been a paedophile, assaulting his wife’s piano pupils. In a climax to the episode Mrs Copley Barnes kills her husband and the Copley Barnes’ gardener is arrested for the murder of Dr Dear. The gardener had wanted to assault the Master because he had interfered with his daughter at piano lessons, but had mistaken Dr Dear for the Master.
The Old Barge is where Morse and Lewis go to talk over the case over a beer, for Morse, and an orange juice for Lewis.
