Long Description:

Newton Foust "Newt" Heisley, a commercial artist, designed the iconic, black and white, POW/MIA image for a flag for the National League of Families. United States Congress recognized this organization as "the symbol of our Nation's concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia, thus ending the uncertainty for their families and the Nation".

Heisley's original pencil sketch depicting the silhouette of a soldier with head slightly bowed, a strand of barbed wire, and a watchtower in the background with the words POW-MIA - YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN is widely used on flags and stone monuments in cities and towns across America and around the world.

The Town of Erving in north central Massachusetts has, among other monuments, a polished black stone POW/MIA monument on the west lawn of the Town Hall. The 4' by 2' rectangular monument is placed on a rough cut 6" high granite base and contains the Heisley image on both sides.
