This Barnsley Civic Trust Plaque in recognition of Samuel Joshua Cooper and his creation of an art gallery for the people of barnsley.It is mounted on the left of the entrance to the gallery.
The building on Church Street in barnsley was originally a Grammar School. He purchased it in 1912 and it was completed as the Cooper Gallery in 1913 just before his death. There was a bequest of 275 paintings.
