Manson may look like an ordinary small community, but 200 feet beneath its rich farming soil lies a massive piece of ancient history. It was here that some 74 million years ago, a huge meteorite crashed into the earth leaving a crater measuring more than 23 miles in diameter. The ice age, however, brought in rocks from the north to fill in the huge hole, creating the flat land visible today. The water supply shows small particles of iridium, a property discovered in meteorites but rarely found on earth. The city claims to be the “softwater capital of the world,” and annually celebrates its unique heritage with “Crater Days” held the last full weekend in June.
