The theme of the mural starts to make sense when you realize that it is on the brick wall of a tattoo shop that calls itself Off The Map. It was a common practice to depict uncharted waters as harboring sea serpents and other dangerous creatures as a warning to mariners. The mural has a sailing ship being tossed about in stormy tropical sea while being threatened by a giant squid. For good measure, there is a hungry-looking shark waiting in the lower right corner. The spiral galaxy in the starry sky add to the strangeness.
