The first burial of a cholera victim in Upton-on-Severn occurred on the 25th July, 1832. It is recorded as being Jane Allen, aged 26. She is recorded as having lived in an alley off Dunn's Lane, The alley, Upstone Alley, is now boarded and is the access to no.11.
Over 50 people died in Upton during the epidemic and the churchyard repidly became full. There was an application pending at the time for an extension to the burial ground but as it was not complete the later victims were buried in common ground to the west of the village, a site which is surrounded by a low brick wall.
More than 55,000 people died in the United Kingdom in the 1832 outbreak, part of the second pandemic of 1829-1851.
