The Great Fire of London lasted three days in September 1666, destroying 13,200 homes and 87 churches. Almost 90% of London residents became homeless. The fire destroyed buildings in the neighborhood of this Museum as well.
The Museum has several displays of interest...a painting of the fire, charred artifacts found by archaeologists, an explanation of how Londoners fought the fires, histories of key personalities...like Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey..initially hailed as a hero during the fire..but then prosecuted for gouging the public when selling his stockpile of coal. The Museum also displays a plaque that was once put up at the bakery where the fire started...blaming the fire on Papists.
