The History of the Bull and Butcher Public House
Called 'The Bull' in the early 1800s, the Bull and Butcher has been run as a public house for at least 2 centuries, and there is a record of landlords back to the mid 1800s. George Welch was the registered landlord in 1847 and was noted as a butcher and baker also.
A child's shoe was found during renovation work on the building, and is now framed in the pub! This was a common talisman that was built into walls to confer good luck on the occupants.
The end portion of the building used to be a general stores, and in addition to this, when Thomas Tompkins was landlord, he ran a wheelwright business behind the pub. This remained until 1915.
The 1908 Grand National winner Rubio was stabled next door in an adjoining barn in the same year, although it's not known what his choice of drink was.
