In Boston, at the edge of the Tufts Medical Center, Chinatown, and Bay Village areas, is the Tufts Medical Center Station along the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Orange subway line.
This station is a relatively modern facility that was built when the Orange line was realigned. There are several entrances. One entrance is at 750 Washington Street that is at the base of the hospitals, there; Tufts Medical Center and Children's Floating Hospital. The other, the one I used, is at the corner of Tremont Street and Oak Street, known as the South Cove entrance for a section that is part of the Bay Village neighborhood. The platform area is a large, cavernous space. The walls and floor are lined with dark brick. There are several artistic compositions on the walls.
The MBTA web site lists several handicapped access options, including an elevator, escalator, ramps/lifts. Likely not all options are available at both ends. Fares are posted on the site. Currently, the system uses a 'smart card' system, called the "Charlie Card," where you prepay at a kiosk, loading a value onto the card, then run the card through the access at the turnstile. There are other combo passes passes available - see the MBTA site for details.
The orange line first existed as an elevated line that ran from Charlestown (now part of Boston) to Forest Hills and Everett to Forest Hills. In the 1970s and 1980s, there was an effort to build a highway corridor through this part of Boston. When this project was abandoned due to high resistance to the large amount of demolition that would have taken place, it was decided that the old elevated line would be rerouted to run alongside the Amtrak/MBTA commuter rail line or underground. The last of the elevated sections along Washington Street was removed from April to May 1987, and on May 4, 1987, the line was rerouted. This station is a fully underground station away from the railroad where the orange line turns north into the city. It was originally named New England Medical Center until 2010, when the name was changed when the New England Medical Center changed to Tufts Medical Center.
Bus connections include the 'Silver Line' bus route, SL5, and bus routes 43 and 11. See the web site for details.
