This station is a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey standard bench mark disk, located in Wilmot, NH, on the Northern Rail Trail, formerly the Northern Railroad, later the Northern Division of the Boston & Maine Railroad. Located between U.S. Route 4 and Eagle Pond, the mark is set in a large boulder 6.5 feet above the trail and 17 feet east from the trail centerline. The NHDOT datasheet description is as follows:
THE STATION IS LOCATED IN WILMOT.TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. ROUTE 4 WEST AND STATE ROUTE 11 IN ANDOVER, GO WEST FOR 1.55 MI (2.49 KM) ON ROUTE 4 TO THE JUNCTION OF EAGLE POND ROAD. TURN LEFT AND GO SOUTHWEST FOR 0.1 MI (0.2 KM) TO THE ABANDONED RAILROAD CROSSING. PARK THE VEHICLE AND HIKE NORTH FOR 1320 FT (402.3 M) TO THE STATION ON THE RIGHT.THE STATION IS A STANDARD USGS DISK STAMPED---M 3 1933---, SET IN THE TOP OF A 7-FT X 6-FT X 4-FT LARGE PROMINENT BOULDER, 6.5 FT (2.0 M) ABOVE THE TRACK. LOCATED 17.0 FT (5.2 M) EAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE TRACKS.
The NGS datasheet is similar, however, note that the rail closest to Rt. 4 is referenced as north; magnetically it is east. The mark is not set in a concrete post as described, nor is it 10 feet above the trail, it is in a large boulder 6.5 feet above the trail bed (This error has been reported). The distance from Milepost B107 is useful. The signal is gone. For both the NGS and NHDOT descriptions, the rails are no longer in place here.
The mark is above eye level, but the boulder is easy to spot.
Both NGS and NHDOT datasheets are accessible at the links below.
