Saved from demolition in 1997, the building was purchased by entrepreneur Frank Sanns Jr, and converted into a facility used for wedding receptions. At first it was difficult to attract investors for the project, maybe because the West End had a bit of a bad reputation, and thus some would say that people would not come here for a wedding reception. But the skeptics were proven wrong, and the building has been booked 40 weekends a year.
The facility is now known as James Centre.
St James School was a catholic school of the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese. In 1991, it was selected for closure due to declining enrollment. In that year, the student population K-8 was 118 students.
