Dating to the Victorian era the font is an octagonal design with a tall, wooden cover. There are simple fleur-de-lis icons on the bowl, quite apt as the Scouting movement was founded here on Brownsea Island and there is a wall chart of Scout badges on the wall behind. There is a simple, narrow pedestal.
St Mary's Church was built in 1853-4 for Col. Waugh who purchased the island in the hope of finding China clay.
