"Lion of St. Mark
Venetian, 17th or 18th Century

A gilded winged lion, carved in wood
and plaster, symbol of the evangelist
St. mark and emblem of the Venetian
City State. It was removed by British
forces when they evacuated the
Venetian fortress on Corfu in 1809."
