This fountain was erected in 1868 to mark the completion of a new town water system. The new water system was built in response to a cholera epidemic in 1866.
The fountain was originally situated in Castle Square (Y Maes) but was moved due to re-development in that area.
There is a bi-lingual plaque on the fountain which reads:

25 APRIL,1868.THE HEIR TO THE
THRONE PERFORMING THE CEREMONY
OF TURNING ON THE TAPS.
