Britain's road network was not originally the extensive and coordinated network that it is now.

It grew up out of a series of individual toll roads or 'turnpikes'. Access to these roads was usually at a gate, or turnpike and over the years inns developed at these points. Many adopted the name The Turnpike.

This one is located along The Great North Road, a major route that developed out of a series of toll roads.
