Avonworth Park has a long history, beginning its life as Camp Horne, a private camp for the employees of the Joseph A. Horne Department Store. That's why the park is located on "Camp Horne Road." Now operated by the Borough, Avonworth Park boasts first-rate picnic pavillions, baseball diamonds and a public swimming pool. It is also the home of the very first geocache found by The Leprechauns with their new GPS in June 2002. Today we returned there to find the "Doggie Diner" cache, placed by the same owners in a different section of the park.
The park suffered very extensive damage as a result of the Hurricane Ivan flooding along Lowries Run. This included the destruction of the tennis courts and of the footbridge connecting the playground to the parking lot. An Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 321 (sorry, his name wasn't given) took it up as an Eagle Service Project to build a new bridge.
The new wooden footbridge is operational, but still requires some finishing work. It is a first-class bridge that will hopefully last for many years. The craftsmanship is very professional, and the scouts who worked on this should be very proud of themselves.
If you have young kids, the playground across the stream is first-rate. As you pass over the bridge, take a moment to thank the Eagle Scout who made your stroll a short and comfortable shortcut.
