York was one of two eastern ends of the Western Maryland Railway, the other being Baltimore. This building would have been the office for managing freight shipments coming onto or coming off of the Western Maryland from other railroads, such as the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad. Originally this building had a long warehouse extending for quite a distance and attached to the back of the station. It was demolished just a few years ago.
