There are several Salt Evaporation Ponds in Alcochete, near Lisboa.
They are integrated in the Protected Area of Tagus estuary.
The Tagus estuary is the largest wetland in the country and one of the most important in Europe, a sanctuary for fish, molluscs, crustaceans, and especially for birds. It is the largest estuary in Western Europe, with about 34 000 hectares and houses about 50 000 aquatic birds (flamingos, ducks, waders).
