(PT) "Escultura em bronze, uma homenagem a D. João II, cuja visão de carácter universalista lançou as bases do Estado moderno.
A escultura representa não o próprio monarca, mas aquilo que ele simboliza - a universalidade. O monumento é constituído por duas partes distintas: a escultura propriamente dita e a sua base. A base exprime a sua dedicação para com o seu povo, através da representação das suas armas e de um pelicano (símbolo do amor e sacrifício paternal).
Escultor: Manuel Rosa nasceu em 1953 em Beja. Tirou o Curso de Escultura na Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa, em 1978."

The sculpture represents not the monarch himself, but what it symbolizes - the universality. The monument consists of two distinct parts: the sculpture itself and its base. The foundation expresses its dedication to its people, through the representation of their weapons and a pelican (symbol of parental love and sacrifice).
