When one goes into the patio area on the east side of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, one finds two works by Frank Fleming. One is The Magic Hoop. The other is The Till Fountain, which was created in 1994. This work combines a simple fountain shape with delightful animal and fish sculptures. There is a quotation from T. S. Eliot's work Little Gidding (No. 4 of 'Four Quartets') engraved on the fountain. The words are: "We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." The complete work can be found at (

Alabama sculptor Frank Fleming (1940- ) is internationally known for his fanciful sculptures in ceramic and bronze, which combine realistic treatments of animals and plants with mystical and imagined figures, often in fantastical groupings and arrangements. Unlike many sculptors, Fleming does not work from sketches but instead sculpts directly from a mental image of the finished piece, often from what he describes as visions of connections between supernatural and living worlds. His works can be found in municipal spaces, museum grounds, and other public and private arenas. Fleming has won numerous awards, and his work has been featured in dozens of exhibitions and is housed in major private and public collections throughout the United States and in several foreign countries.
