The marker commemorates the site where the Prattville Dragoons assembled in April, 1861, as they prepared to leave for their participation in the Civil War. The unit served in the Army of Tennessee and fought at the Battle of Shiloh. During the war they were moved to other units and served in Mississippi and later North Carolina. They disbanded after General Joseph E. Johnston's surrender on April 26, 1865. More information can be found at (

I did not find any information about the dedication ceremony. Since the marker was dedicated in 1916, it is possible that there were some survivors of the unit still alive. It seems more likely that family members who knew those who served in the unit were at the dedication.
