A 7' by 26" by 22" bronze statue stands on a 83" by 52" by 52" base and was created by Bela Lyon Pratt. The architect for the project was R. Clipston Sturgis and the statue was cast at the Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company foundry. It was dedicated on, approximately, October 23, 1907.
A slender young looking soldier stands upright on a pedestal and looks straight ahead. He is wearing a three button collared jacket and trousers. His left foot is slightly forward and he is holding a hat in his left hand. The pedestal is made of pink granite. On the pedestal there is a plaque with the state coat of arms and below it a second plaque which is inscribed:
IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF
CONNECTICUT
WHO SUFFERED IN
SOUTHERN MILITARY PRISONS
1861-1865
