This large sculpture consists of sheets of metal and granite stones arranged on the ground covering an area about 30sq feet. It is located among the trees and grass in the display area for sculptures on a hillside within Olympic Park, giving it a natural setting. One can walk through the different elements of the sculpture, thus immersing oneself in the artistic experience. It is left bare to the weathering elements, as it blends into the environment.

This is actually one in a series of similar sculptures by Lee U Fan known as the Relatum all of which consist of "dispersed arrangements of stones together with industrial materials like steel plates, rubber sheets, and glass panes, recast the discrete object as a network of relations based on parity between the viewer, materials, and site. In his sculptural series, Relatum, each work consists of one or more light-colored round stones and dark, rectangular iron plates."

Lee U Fan was born in 1936 and studied art in Japan, becoming a leader in the minimalist movement. His works are on display in major galleries around the world including the Guggenheim Museum in New York. He has received international awards including the UNESCO Prize at the Shanghai Biennale in 2000.

ARTIST’S
INTERPRETATION

I am always moved by some-
thing. By changing a natural stone
to an artificially processed one and
by tempting an artificially
processed steel plate to return to
nature, I can let my emotions free.
The harmony of undefined oppos-
ites, myself, stones, and steel
plates meeting this way will create
an inexplicable mysterious world
before us. I want to live in an
unknown inspirational world where
the past meets with the far future.
Lee, U-fan

This sculpture is kept in cond-
ition being decayed and changed
by natural phenomena to make the
most of the Artist’s intention of
sculpture.
