James Quigley was born in Oshawa, Ontario, and came to the United States with his parents at age 2, settling at Lima, New York. Quigley was ordained a priest on April 13, 1879. On December 12, 1896 he was appointed Bishop of Buffalo, where he was ordained a bishop on February 24, 1897. Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago is named in his honor.
Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary was an American seminary preparatory school administered by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago for young men considering the priesthood. Located in downtown Chicago. It closed on June 22, 2007, and became the Archbishop Quigley Center, the pastoral center and headquarters of the Archdiocese in 2008.
