This tunnel is located in the Promenade plantée, a ‘greenway’ that crosses Paris’s entire 12th arrondissement (4.5 km) along a former railway line, that has been turned into a pedestrian walk. It begins behind the Bastille opera house and runs above avenue Daumesnil to the Jardin de Reuilly: it is the famous Viaduc des Arts. The allée Vivaldi then comprises the shopping part of the walk. Then, it continues in tunnels and cuttings to finish at the Porte Dorée and the Bois de Vincennes.
The line was closed in 1969 and in 1988 by Philippe Mathieux and Jacques Vergely created the Promenade plantée, a mixture of areas with wild vegetation that had sprung up alongside the railway line with more modern landscaped areas.
