This bridge is named after Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911.
The first bridge at this location was constructed in 1872. The current four lane bridge was originally built in 1900 and it was extended to the east in 1945.
Laurier Bridge was reconstructed in 2001-2003. The original four arches built in 1910 over the Rideau Canal were refurbished and two new arches to the south were added.
