Lago das Tágides (The Tágides Lake) is a work of the Portuguese artist João Cutileiro.
The "Tágides" are the nymphs of the Tagus river tho whom Camões (Portuguese greatest poet known as Camoens in English) asks for inspiration to compose for his work The Lusíadas (The greater poem of the Portuguese literature). They are an adaptation of the Nereids of Greek and Roman mythology, nymphs who live in the seas and rivers. These inhabit the river that flows in Lisbon, Portugal.
Fourteen Tagides come in a Falua (traditional Tagus boat ) to play and bathe in the waters of the Tagus, represented here by a long reflecting pool. The nude female figures, executed in marble slabs, have a two-dimensional volumetric profile, like dolls with jointed studs connecting the members. The outline of these figures reveals the irregularity of the stone cut and often the breasts and hair are set by adding other elements to the plans that shape their bodies.
The set was made by Cutileiro for the Expo98.
