The sign has two parts:

Panoramic Views
Sky Islands
Mountains that rise above the plains and plateaus of New Mexico are like islands in the sky. These sky islands provide habitat for a variety of plants and animals that aren't found at lower elevations.

Migratory Flyway
New Mexico's mountain ranges are major North American travel routes for migrating birds of prey. These birds can get a free ride on updrafts which carry them for miles on their long journeys. Common birds to look for along Sandia Crest are Red-tailed Hawks, Cooper's Hawks, Golden Eagles, Sharp-shinned Hawks and Turkey Vultures.

This sign is provided by a partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and Friends of Sandia Mountains.
