Winchester Square is an historic district which is now the cultural and political heart of the black community in Springfield. The City of Springfield and the residents of Winchester Square have erected a granite monument to honor the black citizens of Springfield who died in Vietnam. The monument has an eagle with its wings raised high over its head. The eagle is perched on a horizontal fasces, with leaves on both ends. The monument is inscribed:
