The Carvalhal Esmeraldo palace was built by Francisco Antonio Câmara Leme in 1758 as his family home. Today the building hosts Funchal City Hall.

The Carvalhal Esmeraldo palace was built by Francisco Antonio Câmara Leme in 1758 on top of a previous construction. After, it had various owners and tenants.
In the early nineteenth century was owned by D. Joanna Teresa, daughter of Joana de Carvalhal and her husband, Francisco Roque de Albuquerque Figueirôa, the sergeant-major of Funchal.
In 1868, the Municipality of Funchal rented and moved into the building andm shortly after, they came to acquire it in 1883.
In 1940, with the town council chaired by Dr. Ferando Ornelas, the building and the surroundings are subject to major overhaul, being as we know it today, confronted with large square dominated by a fountain. The project architects were Raúl Lino and Carlos Ramos.
