Shortly after the Columbia Space Shuttle disintigrated upon re-entry on February 1, 2003, the Streamwood Park District renamed this 5-acre park and installed a memorial to those who lost their lives in the disaster.
The memorial reads as follows:

"Their mission was almost complete, and we lost them so close to home." - President George W. Bush
On February 1, 2003, the Columbia Space Shuttle was lost during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphers. This park is dedicated to the memory of the Columbia astronauts who tragically lost their lives.
The people of Streamwood are proud to honor these crew members
