A church was originally constructed on this site in 1632. The present church was constructed in 1683. In 1793, the church was de-christianized and became in 1797 Club of the Jacobins.
Pope Pius VII celebrated mass here December 26, 1804.

The church has an unusual architecture...three doorways, each with a set of columns. A second level with more columns. There are just a few steps to the entrance from street level. The interior is much larger than one would guess from the facade.
