This sculpture depicts Ney (1769-1815) brandishing his sword with his right hand. The figure looks to his left and appears to be yelling. He is in military uniform and wears a hat. A cannon lies under his left foot.
The pedestal reads:
"A LA MEMORIE
DU MARECHAL NEY
DUC DELCHINGEN
PRINCE DE LA MOSKOWA
7 DECIEMBRE 1853"
Ney was involved in many roles during the French Revolutionary Wars...but became famous during the Napoleanic Wars. He was the last Frenchman to leave Russian soil...thus earning him the title Prince of Moscow. Although he had been loyal to Napolean...it fell to him to tell Napolean that the army would disobey him and NOT attack Paris. He forced Napolean to abdicate. Ney was tried and executed for treason after Napolean's second abdication. Read more about him at (
