Roosevelt Avenue bisects what is now an industrial area of Springfield. On the east side of this avenue there is the largest war memorial within the City of Springfield.
180' by 120' grassy plaza is now bisected, north to south, by a fence. Just before the fence, on the west side is a granite memorial. A 45' long series of low steps leads up to a 20' high rectangular monolith flanked by stone benches. The monolith is inscribed:
MEMORIAL FIELD
DEDICATED
TO THE
MEN AND WOMEN
OF SPRINGFIELD
WHO HAVE SERVED
THEIR COUNTRY
IN WAR
---
MCMXXXII
Type of Memorial: Non-Specific Memorial
In Honor Of: Men and Women of Springfield
Marker Text: MEMORIAL FIELD
DEDICATED
TO THE
MEN AND WOMEN
OF SPRINGFIELD
WHO HAVE SERVED
THEIR COUNTRY
IN WAR
MCMXXXII
Date of dedication: 1932
Who Put it Here?: City of Springfield
Description of Memorial: Look as if this once was a place where people would gather. Today it is in the middle of an industrial area and not easily accessible by pedestrians. There are no sidewalks and a small parking area in front of the lawn.
The memorial is quite large but the inscription is perpendicular to the passing traffic and difficult to read as you drive by.
Wars mentioned (Multi-war only): Not listed
