François-Vincent Raspail (1794-1878) was a major figure in French politics. He was twice a failed candidate for President. He was jailed for his activities as President of the Human Rights Society. He was later forced into exile for eleven years. This monument has reliefs celebrating his career...but the engraving on the monument celebrate him for having been a promoter of universal suffrage in 1836. It reads in French:
"RASPAIL PROMOTEUR DU SUFFRAGE UNIVERSEL EN 1834 (JOURNAL DE REFORMATEUR)" AND "LE 25 FEVRIER RASPAIL PROCLAME LE REPUBLIQUE SUR LA PLACE DE L'HOTEL DE VILLE" which in English means "RASPAIL proponent of universal suffrage in 1834 (Journal of REFORMER)" and "On February 25, 1848, Raspail proclaimed the Republic at City Hall".
The monument is located in Square Jacques-Antoine in Paris.
The monument indicates that the artist is C. Morice.
