With 2,425 feet, Yosemity Falls is the highest waterfall in North America.

In 2009, a bronze sculpture of the waterfall area was placed along the trail leading to the bottom of the falls. Originally, this very realistic sculpture was "only" to be a really cool piece of art, but was never intended to demonstrate a scientific principle.

However, park rangers soon found out, that the model was in fact so realistic, that it could be used to demonstrate how the water flow down Yosemite Falls changes through the seasons and how it affects the valley.

In our pictures, a park ranger uses a can of water, starting to poor down a lot of water, demonstrating the heavy snow melt in spring. The waterfall is in full action and all the little creeks in the valley gradually fill up with water too.

As the water can empties, demonstrating the dry summer season, less water goes down the falls and many of the creeks in the valley fall dry.

The ranger told us, he was hoping that on a very cold winter day, he could actually demonstrate how the fall gradually freezes over.

After his demonstration, the kids were invited to try it out themselves and some of them had fun creating real floods in the valley, as they happen occasionally in spring.

The artist must be really pleased to see so much attention being drawn by his sculpture.

Scientific Principle(s) being demonstrated:
How snow melt, wet and dry seasons affect water flow.

Briefly explain if the experiment was effective for you. Could it have been better?:
We thought is was really cool - and the kids really loved it!

When is the apparatus/experiment available to the public:
24/7/365 There is a $20 per car entrance fee to get into the park.
