Chonburi is a Thai province stretching along the Gulf of Thailand, to the south east of Bangkok. It is an industrialised province, one of the more populous, and of course, it contains the wonderous resort city of Pattaya. As you would expect, there is a bus terminal for this province, which is located ~4kms to the north of the centre of the city of Chonburi, the provincial capital, which itself is located on the coast, in the north of the province.

In design the terminal is standard, however, it is newer than many and larger than most, very likely reflecting the populous nature of the province. At the front of the station, facing the entry road, is a set of ticket counters, which lead into a long, central, rectangular covered waiting area with seats, and bus bays around. There are 22 bays in the station plus at least that number again on the paved area outside the station building. From this station people travel to and from Bangkok, to the provinces to the south and east, and to the towns and villages in the province.

One noticeable departure from the norm is that the city of Chonburi is not the only city in the province, nor is it the largest—Pattaya has that distinction. The majority of Thai provinces have one dominating capital city and many far smaller towns and villages. This suggests that the provincial terminal is not as important to the provincial travel routes as are most similar bus terminals.

This is what appears to be a new concept bus station. In the past bus stations were constructed in or near the city centres. You got on or off where you start or finish your journey, but this is apparently not efficient. Now, new bus terminals are being built on the outskirts and even outside of provincial capitals. This is more efficient. So that, you arrive, and immediately have to haggle with the local entrepreneurs (taxi drivers) over the fee to be transported the final few kilometres to your destination. Sometimes at 3am in the driving rain. This is efficient. So that rather than having one bus travel to the city centre, now dozens of taxis, motorbikes and tuk tuks make the same journey. This is more efficient.
